The Daughter Who Remains, the final book in Nnedi Okorafor’s She Who Knows trilogy, concludes the story of Najeeba, a powerful sorceress navigating a world transformed by the actions of her daughter, Onyesonwu. The narrative begins with a stark proclamation of Najeeba’s impending death, framing her journey as a final act of destiny and sacrifice.
The Journey West and the Burden of “The Now”
Najeeba’s story is set in a future Africa divided into “The Before” and “The Now”. Following the events of Who Fears Death, where her daughter Onyesonwu rewrote the Great Book and ended the genocide of the Okeke people, the world exists in an uneasy peace. While most people have forgotten the horrors of the past, Najeeba and a few sorcerers like Aro carry the memory of “The Before” as a heavy burden.
After leaving the town of Jwahir with her lover, the glassmaker Dedan, Najeeba travels across the desert toward her childhood home, Adoro 5. They are accompanied by two camels: MorningStar, an old camel Najeeba resurrected during her training, and Tende, a rare and magnificent red-furred camel that Dedan insisted on saving from filth and disease.
During the eight-month journey, Najeeba reveals she is pregnant with Dedan’s child. This pregnancy makes her spiritually unstable; Aro warns that her anger or bad dreams could accidentally set the desert on fire or “rearrange everything”. To maintain her sanity and power, Najeeba continues to practice the Mystic Points she learned from her teachers (Aro, Sola, and the kponyungo Sonnn):
- Uwa Point: The physical world.
- Mmuo Point: The wilderness or spirit realm.
- Alusi Point: The realm of non-human beings and deities.
- Okike Point: The Creator, “the point that cannot be touched”.
The Discovery of Ssolu and the Vah
As Najeeba nears labor, they are overtaken by a “greater witch” a massive, intentional dust storm. While her body suffers the agony of contractions, Najeeba “witches,” leaving her physical form as the kponyungo (a fiery spirit lizard) to seek help. Inside the eye of the storm, she discovers Ssolu, the nomadic village of the Vah (the Red People).
The Vah are a unique people who rub their skin with red palm oil and live within the protection of the dust storm. Unlike the Nuru or Okeke, the Vah possess an innate, natural mysticism. Najeeba is taken in by their sorcerers, Ting and Ssaiku. Ting, a bald sorceress with powerful nsibidi tattoos, reveals she actually knew Onyesonwu and helped save her from a poison curse in the past.
Najeeba gives birth to a daughter she names Ikuku (“Wind”), though the Vah claim the child as their own and name her Sssolu after the village. Sssolu is a “beacon” of a child, possessing an uncanny presence and showing her mother visions of ice, geometric shapes, and even the spirit of her long-lost sister, Onyesonwu.
The Secret of The Cleanser
Najeeba’s true mission is to kill The Cleanser, a mysterious entity that has haunted the Osu-nu people for generations. In Adoro culture, The Cleanser is a spirit that takes children away; they return “cleansed” beautiful, popular, and successful, but fundamentally changed. Najeeba’s father’s sister was a victim of this “cleansing”.
Ting and Najeeba travel to Adoro 5 to find information in the Paper House. There, they meet the Overseer, who, like Najeeba, remembers “The Before” and witnessed the building physically shift and change during the world’s transformation. He leads them to a vault of “Dangerous Documents” where Najeeba finds a circular piece of “printed” paper.
The paper reveals the horrific truth: The Cleanser is a spirit from the wilderness that “cleans what was not meant to be clean”. It is a “Great Liar” that steals the impactful destiny of Osu-nu children, flattening the “peaks and dips” of the people to keep them “unremarkable”. It replaces their true potential with “worthless treasure” like physical allure and social status.
To understand how to kill it, Ting and Najeeba perform a ritual to summon a thirty-foot masquerade from the wilderness. The masquerade informs Najeeba that she has thirty-two nights until The Cleanser arrives, and that she “already knows how to do it”.
The Final Confrontation
Najeeba realizes that The Cleanser is not going to her hometown to hunt, but to Ssolu to take her daughter, Sssolu the only Osu-nu child in the Vah village. Leaving Dedan and her baby in the care of the Vah, Najeeba waits in Adoro 5 to intercept the entity.
The confrontation takes place within Ssolu’s protective dust storm. The Cleanser appears as a tall, ramshackle figure with a head made of sliding sands and “yawning maws” for eyes. It attempts to hypnotize Najeeba, offering her “peace” and a “cleansing,” but she rejects it, declaring herself his “trouble” and “death”.
The Cleanser reveals itself as an abomination a “living masquerade” that has unnaturally thrust itself into the physical world. It attempts to rip a “light” from Najeeba’s forehead a gift of “water” or spirit given to her years ago by the sorcerer Cat. In the ensuing battle, Najeeba uses the same destructive fire she once used to help the general Daib atone for his sins, and she tears The Cleanser apart, killing it once and for all.
Destiny and Arrival
The death of The Cleanser triggers a shockwave of spiritual and physical consequences. Najeeba’s spirit form is shredded, and her physical body, which she left on a hill in Adoro 5, is badly burned when a lightning strike sets a palm tree on fire.
Fleeing from a legion of spirits that emerged from The Cleanser’s destruction, Najeeba seeks refuge in her village’s Adoro temple, a crumbling and forgotten ruin in “The Now”. There, she is surrounded by the entity’s true form a gigantic, white, unfolding essence that fills the temple and buckles the walls.
Najeeba realizes she has fulfilled her father’s desperate prayer for revenge and her own destiny as a sorceress. As she sits amidst the ruins of the temple, staring up at the empty eyes of the spirit, she prepares to shed her physical form and become the Alusi she was always meant to be a desert spirit of “fire, dust, and wind” who will wander the dunes for eternity. She finds peace in knowing that the path is finally clear for her daughter Sssolu to “create” a new future.
