Summary of A Song of Legends Lost
The World of the Nine Lands
The story is set on a continent known as the Nine Lands, where society is strictly divided between the highblood clans Mizito, Adatali, Itahua, Navret, Tarsin, Qaneen, and the supposedly extinct Kzani and Menit and the lowblood commoners who serve them. The highbloods maintain power through the Bond, a spiritual connection that allows them to invoke the spirits of their founding ancestors to fight the greybloods, monstrous techwork-infused beings that have plagued humanity for two millennia. The realm is ruled by the Ahiki Royal Clan from a secluded, golden-shrouded palace known as the Garden, located in the capital city of Nine Lords. Underpinning this society is techwork, the cursed and “Forbidden” relics of the lost Scathed people, which only the Holy Orders of monks and nuns are permitted to handle or “Cleanse”.
Part One: The Fall of Aranduq and the Voice in the Slums
Temi Baker and the Chained Man In the eastern slum district of Lordsgrave, Temi Baker, a twenty-two-year-old lowblood from a family of bakers and techwork smugglers, arrives at an abandoned wharf to find her uncle Leke and several cousins murdered. Their boat is charred by unnatural green flames, and their cargo of Scathed relics is lost. In her grief, she encounters a “spirit witch” who places a “curse” on her, which manifests as a persistent, commanding voice in her head belonging to an entity she calls the Chained Man.
Temi’s family, the Arrant Hill bakers, operates a clandestine business selling “water votives” small pieces of techwork that purify the toxic waters of the River Ae. This trade brings them into conflict with the Chedus, one of the powerful Fallen Families that run the criminal underbelly of Lordsgrave. Harvell Chedu threatens the family after Temi’s brother, Tunji, is caught selling votives in Chedu territory. Shortly thereafter, Tunji’s brutally beaten body is dumped at the bakery’s door. Driven by a need for protection and revenge, Temi begins listening to the Chained Man, who identifies himself as Vunaji a powerful “Intelligence” from the underplane or Throxx.
Jinao Mizito’s Awakening In the southern city of Aranduq, Lord Jinao Mizito is the “soulbarren” middle child of First General Sulin Mizito, the Guardian of the Ae. Unlike his siblings Jemusi and Julon, Jinao has failed twenty-two times to Bond with the spirit of their ancestor, Mizito. During a massive greyblood assault on the Aranduq estuary, Sulin is slain by the Bairneater, a legendary and terrifying named greyblood. The Bairneater impales Sulin on its blade and retreats, but not before Jinao, in a moment of frantic desperation, strikes the creature with an axe, severing its arm.
Following Sulin’s funeral, a royal messenger from the Garden, Princen Tamun Ahiki, arrives to declare a War Draft. Every household in the Nine Lands must provide two souls for an invasion of the Feverlands, the toxic heart of greyblood territory. Jinao, still reeling from his mother’s death, finally Bonds with the ninety-first incarnation of Mizito after falling into a trance at the palace shrine. However, the Bairneater returns, having regrown its arm, and challenges Jinao directly, demanding they meet in thirty days in the city of Ramanit. The creature executes Tamun Ahiki in a display of shocking violence and destroys much of Aranduq before escaping.
Part Two: The Lost Voyage and the Rebellion of Noble Houses
Father Boleo and the Shipwreck In the Adatali port of Ninshasi, an ancient Scathed “travelling carriage” washes ashore, containing the bodies of Invoker Jethar Mizito and Invoker Cantec Itahua, who disappeared five rains ago on a quest to find the “place where spirits gather”. Father Boleo, a Grand High Curator who secretly hoards techwork for his warlord, Daloya Adatali, realizes the carriage is sealed and requires the blood of both Mizito and Itahua to open.
When the carriage is opened in the Adatali capital, Ewo, Jethar and Cantec are found to be alive but in a state of madness. Jethar abruptly murders Cantec before turning the blade on himself. Boleo discovers a strange silvery entity not an ancestor attempting to climb out of Jethar’s skin. Before he can investigate further, a royal spy, Father Emata, arrives to seize the techwork and the bodies for the Garden. Boleo manages to hide the carriage’s contents, but he is forced to flee with Invoker Morayo Adatali and the Butcher of Busharn, a disgraced soldier named Ashu, into the Busharn Wastes to find the truth behind Jethar’s voyage.
Manax Itahua and the Cloistered In the Itahua capital of Qenqar, Captain Elari (Cantec’s widow) returns to find First General Manax miraculously healed from a terminal wasting sickness. Manax has undergone a “procedure” performed by mysterious outland healers who claim to be from a land called Ertla. These healers have replaced the palace’s Holy Orders with “blue smoke” entities called the Cloistered.
In a shocking move, Manax declares independence from the Ahiki Royal Clan and publicly displays the severed head of a royal envoy. He further reveals that he has “un-Bonded” his ancestor, Itahua, and demands his children do the same, claiming the ancestors are merely “mindwraiths” used by the Ahikis to control the clans. Elari witnesses a Cloistered spirit being dragged out of a warrior’s body and realizes these entities are not healers but parasites that join with human souls to create a new, compliant collective.
Part Three: The Scathed Truth and the Great Hunt
Jinao and the Kzani Secret Jinao’s journey to Ramanit ends in disaster. The Bairneater lures Jinao and his brother Julon into a trap, where it kills Julon and places a Forbidden curse on Jinao’s Bond, severing his connection to Mizito. Jinao is rescued by Adimu Kzani, a girl claiming to be from the extinct Clan Kzani. She takes him to a secret mountain camp where her grandfather, Nirere, reveals a world-shattering secret: the Scathed were not another species, but ancient humans whose advanced civilization was destroyed by the Ahikis.
Nirere uses techwork to “sharpen” Jinao’s Bond, allowing him to bypass the Ahiki-imposed neural limiters. Jinao learns that he is not actually a Mizito by blood, but a descendant of the folk hero Sumalong. In the ancestral realm, Jinao meets his true ancestors and learns that invocation is a lie designed to turn ancestral spirits into weapons. He manages to invoke both Mizito and Sumalong simultaneously, a feat previously thought impossible.
The Siege of Lordsgrave Back in Nine Lords, the situation in Lordsgrave reaches a breaking point. The Holy Orders, fearing the spread of the Cloistered spirits (which have begun emerging from Temi’s sabotaged votives), raise a massive blackglass wall around the district, sealing thousands of lowbloods inside with an army of greybloods.
Temi, realizing her votives were designed by Vunaji to “fail” by releasing spirits that would draw the monks’ attention, confronts the entity. As the greybloods massacre the residents, Temi uses a “doorway” device (disguised as a mechanical cat) to pull her deceased family members Leke, Tunji, and her cousins back from the “Place Beyond” to fight alongside her. In the midst of the chaos, Vunaji manifests physically and consumes the Chedu ancestor, absorbing its power and declaring himself ready for the “Great Hunt”.
Part Four: The Ascension of the Arbiters
The Final Confrontation at the Ridge In the Busharn Wastes, Father Boleo and Morayo Adatali build a massive shrine to Vunaji, believing it is the weapon they need to end the war. The Bairneater arrives, delivering Jinao to them as the “particular mind” required to host the Vunaji spirit. However, the Bairneater reveals it is not a mindless monster but a vessel carrying a copy of Sulin Mizito’s consciousness, and that she and Daloya Adatali planned this “rebellion” for decades.
As Jinao attempts the Bond, the Vunaji spirit (which Temi has also invoked in Lordsgrave) creates a spiritual feedback loop. The ancestor Vunaji chooses Boleo instead of Jinao, plunging into the monk’s chest and granting him immense power. The Bairneater, now free of Sulin’s influence, retreats into the Feverlands, warning that the “Great Horde” of greybloods is coming to finish what was started.
The Fall of the Garden The novel concludes with a series of revelations and a shift in power. Princen Hetemam Ahiki arrives in Lordsgrave with a specialized techwork box and captures Aan, the entity residing within Jethar Mizito. Aan warns that she is only one of eight “Intelligences” lie in wait, bound to souls of power across the kingdom.
In the Garden, the techdoctor Lyela is revealed to be Princen Lyelatuana Ahiki, the king’s own daughter who was cast out twenty years ago. She infiltrates the king’s chambers and uses the black orb weapon she stole from Elari to erase King Jakhenaten II’s consciousness. She severs the king’s hand (containing his ancestral Bond) and prepares to take the throne herself, intending to watch the old world burn as she ascends.
The Aftermath Temi remains in the ruins of Lordsgrave, having seen her aunt Yeshe and mother Kerlyn taken in the final sweep of the War Draft. Jinao, now stripped of his ancestors again by the Bairneater’s final curse, enlists in the royal army as a commoner (“Janzen”), intending to follow the monster into the Feverlands to fulfill his vow. Meanwhile, the Cloistered spirits continue to spread through the noble houses, and the Holy Orders scramble to hide the truth: that the “ancestors” they have worshipped for centuries are actually digital remnants of a human past they helped destroy.
