In contrast, Chiamaka Adebayo is the school’s “Queen Bee,” a high-achiever who has spent three years meticulously crafting a persona of perfection and power to secure her future at Yale.
Their lives collide during the first-day assembly when Headmaster Ward, a tall, ominous man who recently replaced Headmaster Collins, announces the senior leadership positions. To his shock, Devon is named a Senior Prefect, while Chiamaka is appointed Senior Head Prefect for the third year in a row. During the assembly, a technical glitch momentarily displays an Ace of Spades playing card on the giant screen, an event that goes largely ignored by the student body but serves as a grim omen for the protagonists.
The peace is short-lived. A series of mass text messages from “Aces” begins to circulate throughout the school. The first blast targets Devon, outing him by sharing a picture of him kissing Scotty, a popular football player. Devon, who has not yet come out to his mother and fears the violent repercussions of his neighborhood, is thrown into a state of panic. He confronts Scotty, only to find that Scotty is thriving on the attention and denies being Aces.
Simultaneously, Chiamaka’s carefully constructed world begins to crumble. She is in love with her best friend, Jamie Fitzjohn, and expects him to ask her out. Instead, Jamie reveals he is dating Belle Robinson, a girl Chiamaka considers “conventionally attractive” but beneath her. Aces strikes Chiamaka next, mocking her rejection by Jamie and later setting her up in a candy store theft. Although Chiamaka is innocent, Aces logs the message about the theft two days before it actually occurs, revealing a terrifying level of premeditation.
As the blasts continue, Devon’s life descends further into chaos. A sex tape of him and Scotty is leaked, leading to his public humiliation. His best friend, Jack McConnel, pulls away, expressing disgust and claiming he must protect his own brothers from the fallout of Devon’s “scandals.” Desperate and alone, Devon seeks comfort with Andre, a local drug dealer he has been seeing in secret. However, even this refuge is destroyed when Andre breaks up with him to protect his own reputation in the neighborhood. Shortly after, Devon is brutally beaten by Andre’s gang members.
Part II: X Marks the Spot – The Investigation
Following the assault, Devon is rescued by Terrell Rosario, a boy from his past whom he cannot quite remember. Terrell becomes a supportive figure, helping Devon recover and encouraging his music. Meanwhile, Chiamaka loses her Head Prefect badge and is forced into daily detention alongside Devon after Headmaster Ward accuses them of spreading rumors about each other.
Realizing they are both targets of the same enemy, Chiamaka and Devon form an unlikely alliance. Chiamaka recruits Peter, a student and expert hacker, to trace the Aces messages. Peter discovers that the messages are sent from Computer 17 in the Morgan Library and are logged on Sunday and Monday nights using an account that utilizes a randomizer to hide the user’s identity.
The harassment escalates from digital to physical. Posters of a passed-out Chiamaka, surrounded by eerie blond dolls, are plastered throughout the school. Aces also begins to hint at a dark secret from Chiamaka’s past: a hit-and-run accident during her junior year. Chiamaka has lived with the guilt of believeing she and Jamie killed a girl and left her body on the side of the road.
Chiamaka eventually discovers that the girl from the accident, Martha, is not only alive but is the sister of Belle Robinson. This revelation shatters Chiamaka’s trust in Belle, with whom she had begun a romantic relationship.
Part III: Ballot or Bullet – The Social Eugenics Revelation
Devon and Chiamaka conduct a stakeout at the Morgan Library on a Sunday night. They witness a masked figure at Computer 17, whom Chiamaka unmasks as Martha. In the ensuing chaos, Martha escapes, but Devon manages to access the files she left open. He discovers the “Ace of Spades Secret Society,” which uses an acrostic of the school values to spell out the horrific phrase: “NIGGER DIE.”
The computer contains folders labeled “The Girls” and “The Boys,” documenting the systematic destruction of every Black student who has attended Niveus since 1965. The files reveal that students like Jack, Daniel Johnson, and Mindy Lion were assigned specific tasks to monitor and sabotage Chiamaka and Devon. Even the teachers are involved; Devon’s mentor, Mr. Taylor, mocks him, revealing he intentionally encouraged Devon to miss classes so his poor attendance would disqualify him from Juilliard.
Chiamaka confronts Belle, who admits that her family has participated in this “tradition” for decades. She describes it as “social eugenics,” a planned effort to ensure that high-achieving Black students are “broken down” and forced to drop out, preventing them from ever attaining positions of power.
The Final Confrontation and the Fall of Niveus
Devon and Chiamaka attempt to seek help from a journalist, Alice Donovan, planning a live televised exposé at the Senior Snowflake Charity Ball. However, they soon realize that Donovan is also part of the conspiracy. At the ball, the student body dons the Guy Fawkes masks used by Aces, revealing that the entire school is a cult dedicated to their failure.
Headmaster Ward corners them with a gun, but Chiamaka manages to incapacitate him with a stun gun. A massive fire, sparked by explosions of unknown origin (possibly linked to the protesters who arrived following Devon’s viral tweet about the school), begins to consume Niveus Academy. Devon and Chiamaka narrowly escape the collapsing building.
The aftermath is somber. Three students, including Jamie Fitzjohn and Cecelia Wright, die in the fire. Devon finally reconciles with his mother, who reveals she always knew he was gay and was only trying to protect him from the same systems that killed his father (who, he discovers, was actually on death row and executed years ago).
Epilogue: Sixteen Years Later
Sixteen years after the fire, Chiamaka is a doctor and Devon is a professor. Together, they have founded the Underground Society and the Ruby Bridges Academy, organizations dedicated to identifying and protecting Black students from other institutions that still practice social eugenics.
In the final scene, Chiamaka visits a hospital room to see her final patient: a dying, sickly Headmaster Ward. The book concludes with her standing over the man who tried to destroy her, a symbol of her ultimate survival and triumph over the system.
